Genius at Work

E-mail Print PDF

IN A world that measures the confidence of a young man by how proudly he can promote his own interests, how skilfully he can walk with his pants below his waist, or how many girls he can acquire in a night, 17-year-old Darren Neill Gooden is an inspiring enigma.

Anyone who glimpses Gooden, as he walks home from school with his head bowed, a huge knapsack on his back, and an enormous French dictionary in his hand, could easily guess that the boy has a 'liking' for his books; however, few would imagine that he has already been accepted to study at some of America's finest universities.

Gooden, an upper-sixth-form student at Manchester High School in Mandeville, has been awarded a full scholarship to study mathematics and computer sciences at Yale University - one of the oldest and most prestigious Ivy League universities in the United States. The scholarship, which covers tuition, board, books and personal supplies, is valued at approximately US$54,602 (J$4,804,976) per year!

That, however, is just the tip of the iceberg.

Sheri-Ann Peckham of Manchester High School is "likkle" but as we would say in Jamaica, "shi tallawah".

This 16-year-old outscored her peers in the 2008 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations, gaining 12 ones.

Yesterday she walked away with the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools (JAPSS) prestigious title of best overall performer in CSEC.

"I am definitely happy because I worked hard and prayed a lot and that has paid off in the end," Peckham told The Gleaner yesterday, following a Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) splendid awards ceremony at St George's College in Kingston.

Twelve Distinctions for Sheri-Ann Peckham

E-mail Print PDF
Manchester High School student, 16-year-old Sheri-An Peckham strikes gold in the recent CSEC exams, and is among the students with the highest scores at her school.

Sheri-Ann's goal was to sit 13 subjects, however, after a meticulous search, her schedule would only allow her to do twelve subjects.
The subjects were Methematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Social Studies, Human and Social Biology, Information Technology, French, Spanish, Principles of Business and Principles of Accounts.

No surprise on her results as Sheri-Ann since early childhood displayed exceptional academic qualities. Her grade six teacher at Belair Preparatory still does not understand why she was not awarded a Government Scholarship then after gaining a 96% average in the GSAT examination.
