Genius at Work

E-mail Print PDF

IN A world that measures the confidence of a young man by how proudly he can promote his own interests, how skilfully he can walk with his pants below his waist, or how many girls he can acquire in a night, 17-year-old Darren Neill Gooden is an inspiring enigma.

Anyone who glimpses Gooden, as he walks home from school with his head bowed, a huge knapsack on his back, and an enormous French dictionary in his hand, could easily guess that the boy has a 'liking' for his books; however, few would imagine that he has already been accepted to study at some of America's finest universities.

Gooden, an upper-sixth-form student at Manchester High School in Mandeville, has been awarded a full scholarship to study mathematics and computer sciences at Yale University - one of the oldest and most prestigious Ivy League universities in the United States. The scholarship, which covers tuition, board, books and personal supplies, is valued at approximately US$54,602 (J$4,804,976) per year!

That, however, is just the tip of the iceberg.

Manchester on Target for the 4x800M Female Title

E-mail Print PDF
Manchester High Schoolblew everyone away in 2008 at the Penn Relays in the 4x800M boys when they ran away with the Championship of America title for the middle distance thriller on the final day of the meet.  They will not be able to defend their title this year because some of the team members are no longer in school.

However, the girl’s team is on fire this year after losing only one (the first one) 4x800M Relay this year and copping the first MILO Junior Grand Prix in the process.  The girl’s team includes Kimberley Brown, Neisha Morris, Charlene Brown and Natoya Goule on anchor.

Manchester will compete in the 4x100M, 4x400M and the 4x800M in the girl’s section and the 4x100M in the boys section.  All the girl’s team are expected to do well even if they do not all win gold.  There is hope that the boys will give a good showing, as well.  The boy’s team will be led by Brandon Tomlinson who copped the 100M title in the boys section of the inaugural MILO Junior Grand Prix.

Edwin Allen pocketed $100,000 after Evans topped the Milo Junior Grand Prix 100m event for girls with 44 points. She won all of the five races, while getting the last one by default as the other competitors failed to turn up.

Evans chalked up eight points for the penultimate race at the Gibson Relays after only two athletes turned up and the points were shared.

Tomlinson won the boys section with 40 points aftert winning three of the five races, and Manchester High garnered $100,000.

Goule at her Best

Manchester High's Natoya Goule hit her best form at last weekend's Gibson Relays to pilot her school to two Championships titles.

The impressive Goule brought the entire National Stadium to its feet on the final leg of the 4x800m when she powered her school to victory after collecting the baton in third place, some 10 metres behind the leaders.

The wins were sweet, not only for the girls from Mandeville, but the entire Jamaica, as they beat two highly touted Team Bickle USA quartets.
